TREATMENT RISKS

At Morayfield Dental Studio, your overall health and well-being are always our highest priority – not just your smile. We believe in prevention-focused, minimally invasive care and will always recommend the most conservative treatment option best suited to your needs. In some situations, cosmetic, surgical, or restorative treatments may be suggested to enhance the appearance, strength, or function of your teeth. While these can deliver excellent results, it’s important to understand that every procedure carries potential risks. Below is an outline of possible risks and side effects linked to specific dental treatments. Choosing to undergo any treatment is a significant decision that should be made with full awareness. This information is provided to help you make an informed choice about your care. During your consultation, our registered dental practitioners will discuss your individual risks and suitability in detail.

Important Information

At Morayfield Dental Studio, we want you to be fully informed about your veneer treatment and any associated procedures. In some cases, additional treatments such as gum recontouring or reshaping may be recommended. These carry their own risks, and your dentist will discuss them with you in detail. All dental procedures carry risks. Before proceeding, we encourage you to seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Alternative treatment options may also be available. Please feel free to ask your dentist any questions and seek clarification at any stage—we are here to support you.

Treatment Process & Recovery

Veneer treatment is usually completed over 2 to 6 visits, depending on the complexity of your case. You should be able to continue your daily activities throughout the process; however, in some situations, you may need time to rest and recover. Healing and recovery times vary between individuals, but most patients find that things settle within two weeks.

Ongoing Care

Caring for your veneers is essential to maintaining their look and function. Your dentist will provide a personalized maintenance plan, which may involve additional costs beyond your initial treatment.

Tooth Preparation & Sensitivity

  • Enamel removal: Preparing teeth for veneers involves removing a thin layer of enamel, which cannot naturally grow back.

  • Sensitivity: Some patients experience temporary or prolonged sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure, which may sometimes require further treatment.

Veneer Durability & Appearance

  • Fracture or detachment: Veneers are durable, but they can chip, crack, or loosen over time—especially if you grind or clench your teeth.

  • Colour match: We aim to match veneers as closely as possible to your natural teeth, though exact results may vary.

Gum & Oral Health

  • Gum irritation: Poor oral hygiene or an improper fit can lead to gum inflammation around veneers.

  • Replacement: Veneers are not permanent. Over time, they may need replacement due to wear, damage, or changes in surrounding teeth or gums.

Post-Treatment Effects

  • Temporary discomfort: It’s common to feel mild discomfort, inflammation, or sensitivity after treatment.

  • Bite adjustments: Your bite may feel unusual initially. Adjustments can help achieve a comfortable fit.

Rare Reactions

Although rare, some people may experience reactions to anaesthetic or dental materials. Please let us know if you have any allergies or are taking medications before treatment begins.

At Morayfield Dental Studio, our goal is to provide you with safe, high-quality care while ensuring you feel confident and comfortable throughout your veneer journey.

At Morayfield Dental Studio, we want our patients to be fully informed before starting orthodontic treatment with clear aligners. Like any dental procedure, orthodontic treatment carries risks. Before proceeding, we recommend seeking a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. There may also be alternative treatment options available. Please feel free to ask our team any questions or request clarification at any stage—we are here to guide you through every step of your journey.

Treatment Process & Considerations

Clear aligner treatment is a gradual process that requires commitment and consistency. The total treatment time varies depending on case complexity and how closely you follow the prescribed wear schedule. Long-term retention with retainers is essential to help maintain your results.

  • Compliance matters: Not wearing aligners for the required number of hours per day, missing appointments, or irregular usage can extend treatment or limit results.

  • Additional procedures: Some complex cases (such as severe bite issues or narrow jaws) may need extra treatments, such as bonded buttons, elastics, temporary anchorage devices, or minor restorative work.

  • Medical conditions & medications: General health and certain medications can influence tooth movement and overall treatment outcomes.

Functional Adjustments

  • Mild tenderness or pressure may occur when switching to a new set of aligners.

  • Gums, cheeks, or lips may occasionally feel irritated.

  • Your bite may shift during treatment, sometimes causing temporary discomfort.

  • Aligners may cause a temporary increase in saliva, dryness, or minor speech changes (such as a lisp), usually resolving within 1–2 weeks.

Retention & Stability

After treatment, teeth can naturally shift over time. Wearing retainers as instructed is essential to reduce relapse and maintain your new smile.

Oral Health Risks

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is critical during aligner treatment. Without proper brushing, flossing, and care:

  • Tooth decay, gum disease, or permanent marks (decalcification) may occur.

  • Gum and bone health supporting the teeth may be affected.

  • In some cases, small “black triangles” can appear if gums don’t fully fill spaces between newly aligned teeth.

Attachments, Adjustments & Appliance Wear

  • Small attachments may be bonded to teeth to help with movement. These will be removed after treatment.

  • Attachments may occasionally fall off and need replacement.

  • Some teeth may require minor reshaping (interproximal reduction) to create space for alignment.

  • Very rarely, aligners may show slight surface wear from grinding—this does not usually affect their effectiveness.

Bite Adjustments

At the end of treatment, some patients may need a small bite adjustment (also known as occlusal adjustment) for comfort and function.

Surgical & Pre-existing Condition Considerations

  • In cases of severe crowding or jaw imbalance, oral surgery may be required before or during aligner treatment. Risks associated with surgery and healing will be explained in detail if this is necessary.

  • Teeth that have been previously traumatised, heavily restored, or root-treated may respond differently to treatment. In rare cases, these teeth may require additional care such as root canal therapy, further restorative treatment, or may be at higher risk of loss.

At Morayfield Dental Studio, our goal is to help you achieve a healthy, confident smile with the safest and most effective treatment pathway for your individual needs.

Traditional implants are designed to replace one or several missing teeth, while All-on implants can restore an entire upper or lower arch using just 4–6 implants to support a full set of teeth.

At Morayfield Dental Studio, our experienced dentists use advanced 3D technology to plan your treatment with precision and minimise risks, ensuring the best possible outcomes.

Before undergoing implant treatment, some lifestyle adjustments—such as quitting smoking—may be necessary. Your dentist will guide you through any changes needed both before and after surgery to help preserve long-term results. In some cases, additional procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts may be recommended to create a stable foundation for your implants.

Important Information

Any surgical or dental procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. We encourage our patients to ask questions and seek clarification about their treatment plan.

Treatment is usually completed over 3–6 visits, depending on your individual case. Recovery times vary, but most patients resume normal activities within a few days, with full healing typically taking two weeks. Long-term success depends on proper care, maintenance, and regular dental checkups.

Surgical & Post-Surgical Risks

  • Upper Jaw Risks: Implants are placed close to the sinus, which can occasionally lead to complications such as sinus involvement or bone instability.

  • Lower Jaw Risks: Implants may be positioned near nerves that provide sensation to the lips, chin, and tongue. Rarely, this can result in temporary or permanent changes in sensation.

  • Implant Stability: In some cases, implants may not achieve sufficient stability right away. A temporary removable appliance may be required until healing is complete.

  • Implant Failure: Though uncommon, implants can fail if they do not properly integrate with the bone. Regular check-ups every 4–6 months are essential to monitor implant health.

Recovery & What to Expect

  • Swelling, bruising, bleeding, and discomfort are normal after surgery and typically improve after the first week.

  • Pain can be managed with prescribed medication.

  • Avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 hours, and sports/exercise for up to 10 days.

  • Smoking greatly increases the risk of implant failure.

  • Soft, cool foods are recommended during initial healing.

  • Some patients may require a short recovery period off work, especially after general anaesthesia.

At Morayfield Dental Studio, our priority is ensuring your implant journey is safe, comfortable, and supported with ongoing care.
